I’m a true crate digger, “wherein a turntablist will visit a used records store and search through their collections of vinyl records to locate rare music, often specifically for the purpose of finding a particular break to incorporate into their performance sets. Used record stores often store the bulk of their older collections in basements or attics, tucked away in milk crates (which are sized ideally to fit a vinyl LP), hence the name of the practice.”

For many people searching out that elusive 12” vinyl represents one of the great pleasures in life. Most towns and cities have a little gem of a store hidden away in a side street. Later, the introduction of the beat box made popular by the legendary Grand Master Flash further explored the creative and economic opportunities that hip-hop provides.

TheCrateDigger interview with Chuck D

The TheCreateDigger.com publisher DJ Trav Gales, http://www.myspace.com/thecratediggerdj since 1977, have been digging for perfect hip-hop beats and instrumental breaks. From the very first time I heard a mix tape of hip hop breaks by the pioneer of the scratch DJ Grand Wizard Theodore, I’ve been hook on searching for vinyl records with hip hop beats and instrumental breaks to blend, backspin and sample.

The mix tape given to me by my cousin from the South Bronx NY sparked a curiosity for hip-hop beats that has lasted over 25 years. As me and my friends carried our gigantic boom boxes blasting our mix tapes. Little did I know at the time, the hip hop music art form born in the boroughs of New York City would spread across state lines, city to city to what is now a world wide phenomenon. http://www.myspace.com/thecratediggerdj

All of my mixtape shows are FREE.
